No! This is a gentle procedure. The area around your toes will feel warm during treatment, and you may find the sensation uncomfortable, but it is not painful.

For some patients, one treatment is enough to eradicate nail fungus. For others, we recommend a short series of treatments spaced about one month apart.

Laser treatments work to kill toenail fungus quickly, but it takes longer for your toenails to grow. Your existing nails will not change, but new growth over the coming months should be healthy. If you are experiencing discomfort from the nail fungus, you can expect relief within 1-2 weeks.

Different treatments work better for different people. Topical creams are very affordable, but they cannot reach the fungus underneath your nails. Some people find oral medications to be effective, but these have a risk of creating liver problems. Laser antifungal treatments are very safe and do not carry any serious side effects, which is one reason we recommend them.

Unfortunately, toenail fungus can be hard to permanently get rid of. Some groups, such as seniors, people with diabetes, and athletes are more likely to get toenail fungus. You can minimize your risk by wearing breathable shoes and getting new shoes once yours are worn. When possible, go without shoes to let your feet breathe, and if you are wearing shoes all day, change your socks midway through the day. Make sure that you’re washing your feet and hands regularly. And wear shower shoes or sandals whenever you are in a locker room, public pool, or any other shared area.
